Great white sharks at Año Nuevo Island
This tour is focused on seeing great white sharks on the surface at Año Nuevo Island, but we may see other wildlife such as dolphins, porpoises, whales, and more. We have an excellent chance to see great white sharks right at the surface!
We have a NOAA / National Marine Sanctuary Educational Permit to use a decoy at Año Nuevo island and South East Farallon Island, in the past this has been very successfull. Great white sharks can be found there during any given day during the adult fall /winter migration We expect to find adult great white sharks ranging from 12 to 19 feet in length, but we may encounter larger sharks too.
The best season is Oct – Feb, in between winter storms. Join us for an intimate encounter into the Red Triangle, fall and winter home of adult great white sharks!
Remember Before You Go
Because our boats travel at 20 plus miles per hour, there is a wind factor that can bring a chill. We have always said, “dress like you are going to the snow in layers.” the Santa Cruz coast weather can feel much cooler when on the water. We have spray-proof jackets for you to wear over your clothes if needed. Once on site, we are adjusting our clothing layers as needed
Seasickness
All Day Expeditions will NOT GO BACK BECAUSE OF SEASICKNESS. It’s your responsibility to come prepared. You should have prior experience at sea and already know what you need to prevent seasickness. Remember to start medication in advance. In the US both Dramamine and Bonine are available over the counter. Some people need prescription drugs. If you do not have experience on the open ocean, or if medication has failed to work for you in the past, please contact us to discuss whether this is the right tour for you. Feel free to email if you have questions or concerns.
Restrooms
- There is no enclosed restroom on the boat, and if you’re comfortable going in the woods while hiking you’ll do fine at the back of our boat. If outdoor options are not for you, please choose a shorter tour. There are restrooms at our location to use before boarding.
- We have a bucket toilet on board and the option to aim off the back of the boat. Women may find it liberating to purchase a pee funnel before the trip, and practice with it at home (Freshette, She-Wee).
Meeting Location
- Departing from Santa Cruz North Harbor “J Dock” –More info and driving directions here
Please Note
All Guests must be in reasonably good health and able to step down into and step up out of the vessel to and from the dock
Our boat is equipped with soft cushions with backrest but even so, if you are pregnant, have a weak back or neck, or if you don’t like going fast over the water, you should not go. If you have concerns please consider booking with one of the the large capacity vessels in Monterey Bay
